As Thanksgiving approaches, Americans across this
great nation plan to gather with their families around lavish
feasts to indulge in some of the best foods. The following day
we’ll run off to the mall to load up on all the coolest gadgets and
best gifts we absolutely need. But first, as “chance” would have
it, this Sunday we will read from James 5:1-6 of how those who
“have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence” should “weep
and wail for the misery that is coming upon you.” Yikes! What
should we do with a passage such as this one in James? Does it mean
that the American culture is completely sinful and we should feel
guilty of the conveniences each of us has in our home? Or should we
write these verses off as not applicable to our own culture? Sunday
we are going to look at wealth from God’s perspective and learn
what our own posture should be towards it. It couldn’t come at a
better time! -Ryan Lenerz
